Vice President, Sir Robert Finch, read a letter of congratulations to the School from its Patron, Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Gloucester and he described King Edward’s as ‘not just a City Foundation, not just a Surrey landmark, it is increasingly a National and International Institution ..... fit for the 21st Century.’ He also congratulated the pupils on their achievements this year, their excellent academic results as well as charitable support, community spirit and success beyond the classroom.

Mr John Attwater, in his first speech as Headmaster, addressed the pupils and advised them that ‘Giving you the best education is the single most important thing King Edward’s can aim to do for you: making the most of it, and using it for good, is the most important thing you can ever do for yourself and the world.’

He also remembered those members of staff who are retiring or moving on, including Brian and Jenni Turner after 22 years’ service, Mrs Pat Snelling, Registrar, after 23 and Master of the Scholars, Mr Nick Secker, after 30 years’ teaching at the School.

To music by Flanders and Swan, Head Girl Felicity Small, sang in rhyming couplets, about the exploits of the School over the last year, and Head Boy, Andrew Baxter, from Elstead, gave the vote of thanks.

On what was one of the hottest days of the year, the Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Nicholas Anstee, joined the Mayors of Waverley, Godalming and Haslemere in celebrating this historic School’s achievements over the past year. Also present were past Lord Mayors of London, including Sir Robert Finch and Sir John Stuttard, both governors of the School, as well as a number of Aldermen, and representatives of many of the Livery companies, reflecting the close links the School holds with the City, where the School was originally founded in 1553.
