This year saw a return to the normal format for the Annual Sports event with all the major finals taking place on the day. The school athletics track on Upper Gurdon’s was in superb condition thanks to the fine weather and the attention of the ground staff. King Edward’s School Parents Association (KESPA) arrived at the crack of dawn to set up the catering marquees and various stalls including the ever popular coconut shy. They did a brisk trade throughout the day and the aroma of sizzling sausages and beef burgers added to the atmosphere.

This was a special day as this would be the last time that Jordan Huggins would perform at school and we will in future have to settle watching him represent GB in the international arena. He has been an outstanding sprinter and only injury last year prevented him from making a major breakthrough, although he completely dominated the under 20 indoor sprint season. We were not to be disappointed and he won the senior boys 200 metres comfortably but this clearly was a warm up for the main event. Given he was running on slightly uneven grass track he completely lived up to expectations by beating his own school record for the 100 metres in 10.9 seconds, a record that will stand for a long time I suspect.

We wish him well in his athletics career as he goes on to study Sports Science at Brunel University and who knows perhaps he will compete for GB in the London 2012 Olympics?

In the House Competitions Edward and Queens carried off the senior titles with Queens and Ridley winning the Inters Championship. Bowen and Pickering were the top teams in the Junior House events.
