King Edward’s School Pupils Raise over £3000 for Malawi Orphanage

Last Saturday, King Edward’s School held a Gala Dinner and Dance in aid of the Mchinji Home of Hope Orphanage in Malawi. The event was completely organised by pupils who are taking part in the biennial expedition to Malawi in July. James Cordery and Andrew Baxter were the main organisers and this was the first time that such a major function at the school had been arranged in all respects by the pupils.

Over 130 guests enjoyed a drinks reception followed by a sumptuous four-course meal, prepared and served with the help of the expedition students and caterers Holroyd Howe. Entertainment was provided by the school’s musicians and singers during the meal and later by Mr Colin Robinson (singer, guitarist) who was supported by an in house discotheque.

Guest of honour and speaker for the evening was The Dean of Guildford, The Very Reverend Stock who gave an amusing speech, commenting on how impressed he was at the school’s ability to ‘pull together as a community’ particularly in such hard economic times. He recognised that caring and giving for others was an essential part of the school’s ethos. A very successful raffle and proceeds from the meal meant that over £3,000 was raised on the evening.

By the end of the year, King Edward’s expects to collect over £10,000 for the Home of Hope and this money will help to purchase a much needed vehicle for the orphanage.
