Junior Scientists put to the test

King Edward’s School hosted a Maths Challenge and Science Day last Thursday where nearly sixty Year 5 and 6 children from nine local (Surrey) schools enjoyed a day of experimentation and testing. The schools involved were Barrow Hills; St James’ Elstead; Rokeby School, Kingston; St Edmund’s School, Hindhead; Bishopsgate School, Egham; Holy Trinity, Guildford; St Andrew’s, Woking; Hall Grove, Bagshot and Pennthorpe School, Rudgwick.

The laboratories were buzzing with groups who had to have ‘nerves of steel’ producing electronic devices to test the steadiness of their hands,

then produce secret messages to flummox their friends and finally create their own DNA.

Forty maths puzzles were also set up to test their mathematical prowess and every pupil went home with a small phial on a necklace, which contained their own DNA.

During the day the participants worked in small teams for many of the challenges and they needed to work effectively in order to achieve the tasks in the limited time available. All of the activities encouraged the youngsters to think creatively and come up with novel solutions to the problems set. Judging by their performance, these youngsters will be some of our future business leaders and scientists.

“This is our first year offering a Science and Maths day to local schools, and complements our Science Lectures which have proved very popular. It is very important to make these subjects accessible and interesting, and I am very pleased to see many budding scientists taking part so enthusiastically in the experiments and challenges. We will definitely be repeating this experiment!” said Gwyn Phillips, Deputy Head - Community Relations.
