There were over fifty participants, who ages ranged over several generations. Approximately half of the competitors were Old Witleians and their guests and the other half was made up of pupils, parents, staff and governors so virtually all parts of the KES community were taking part.
Bacon rolls and refreshments were provided in the club house and at 11.00 the first pupil tee group of three got underway. Conditions were overcast and blustery and this certainly affected the scores but the threatened rain really didn’t materialise. The course was in excellent condition and the greens were playing fast and players that found the rough were inevitably in trouble. There was a really friendly atmosphere throughout the day and the normal banter between groups as they strived to out do each other!
The Headmaster, Kerr Fulton Peebles and OW Golf President, Bertie Mawer, joined the players, as the groups came in, and after drinks a buffet supper was provided, before the all-important prize giving. There were lots of different categories and a wide array of perpetual trophies and other prizes to be awarded. Bertie Mawer presented the prizes and there were one or two new winners.
The main prizes are given below:

Jamie Crorkin won the Walter Hill Cup and he was the youngest OW competing. We hope that his success will encourage other young OW’s to enter next year.
The Brian Bicknell and Frank Grindle trophy was won by Nigel Bicknell who had the highest overall stableford score for guests.
The Bill Reynolds putter was won by Brian and Nigel Bicknell who just beat the nearest rivals, Danny and Richard Abbott by one point.
Stewart Philo won the Steve Rayment Claret Jug for the second year in the row and he was the lowest handicapped golfer of the day, playing off nine. We wish him well as he leaves the school and look forward to him competing as an OW next year.
Next year will be a rather special year at it will be the 30th Anniversary of the very first OW golf Championship played in 1979 at West Surrey Golf Club. We hope that many players who have take part over the years will return for a rather special occasion. The date for next year’s Championship will be Friday 19th June and it will take place again at Milford Golf Club and there will be a special anniversary meal held at King Edward’s School afterwards.
If you would like details of next year’s event then please contact Gwyn Phillips email CRO@kesw.surrey.sch.uk.
