Wet weather doesn’t dampen golfer’s enthusiasm

The forecast for Friday 17th June looked terrible at the beginning of the week –heavy continuous rain. On the day this did not put off the 50 competitors for the School/Old Witleian Golf Championship. The venue for the 32nd playing of the competition was held at Milford Golf Course.

The early starters did have to endure some fairly heavy showers and throughout the competition rain was a threat but around 12 noon there was a dry period that lifted everyone’s spirits. The school golf section is enjoying one of its best ever years and no fewer than sixteen competitors took part. There was a good mixture of OW’s from some of the founding members of the club to recent leavers. Parents, staff and guests of the OW’s were the other players involved.

.

Despite the damp conditions the course played well and there were some good scores. The lowest score of the day was achieved by Clara Grun, who is the outstanding school golfer this year. She played par golf and completed the round in 78 and comfortably won the Inters trophy.

Steve Rayment won the Walter Hill Cup for the first time with 34 points, with last year’s winner Ed Willis just one point behind on 33 stableford points. Alan Selby, competing for the first time, came third with 30 points. Harriet Swinerd won the ladies championship with Carol Hardyman in second place.

.

Peter and Goiga Chorley had the best combined score for an OW and guest and they won the Bill Reynolds putter, not for the first time.

The Swan family had a good first championship with parent Tim being the top guest and son Euan winning the Junior category. Daniel Abraham was in brilliant form and he achieved 41 points playing off a handicap of 16 to pip Phil Humphreys by one point for the Staff cup. Boss Minchaiynunt followed up his success last year in the Inters competion by winning the Seniors section (the Steve Rayment Claret Jug).

Once everyone had dried out we moved to the school for an excellent three course roast meal and the prize giving. Bertie Mawer, President of the Club and his wife were present as was the Headmaster John Attwater. Bertie explained to the younger members how the Golf Club started and how it has evolved over the years.

.

It has been agreed that we will return next year to the original venue for the Championship –West Surrey Golf Club and alternate between there and Milford. Friday 22nd is the date and the meeting and start time will be a little later this year at 12 noon, with t times starting at 12.45 pm.
