School win a fast flowing mixed hockey match against an OW side

On a glorious sunny afternoon, a relatively young OW mixed hockey side took on an even younger School XI.    Alex Dickenson organised the OW side and with one or two exceptions, they were all recent leavers.   Such was the enthusiasm for the fixture that Alida von Boch had even travelled especially from Germany!

Not surprisingly the School team settled into a rhythm of playing that meant that the OWs were under considerable pressure in the first half.    Will Taylor and Philip Strack took control of the midfield and were responsible for starting many of the School’s attacking moves.    The first goal was scored by Archie Fritz after some fine play on the right flank by Victor Steiner.    Victor drove along the goal line and slipped the ball to Archie to finish off at close range.    Shortly afterwards, a short corner resulted in the second goal for the School side and Sophie Landes struck the ball home just inside the left hand post.    Nick Bourne in goal must have wondered what he had let himself in for, as he had only volunteered just before the match started.   The School added a third goal before half time, with Victor Steiner scoring at close range after another attacking move down the right side.

In the second half, the OWs got their second wind and JB and Alex Dickenson took firmer control of the play.    Indeed, Andy Phillips had an opportunity to score for the OWs but managed to shoot wide.   Play was from end to end with both sides creating good opportunities and showing off their skills to the loyal group of supporters that consisted of parents, OWs and current pupils.    In the end there was no further score, and everyone that played had taken part in a fine example of good sportsmanship and hockey skills.

Afterwards, both teams and supporters were entertained in the School Dining Hall to a roast dinner for the players and sandwiches and drinks for the supporters.   I would like to thank everyone for taking part in what was a very enjoyable occasion.
