Ron Etherington retires from teaching lifesaving at KESW

Ron_presentation_web_1.jpg

In 1994, having retired from teaching full time, Mr Ron Etherington agreed with Gwyn Phillips to coach lifesaving here for one term. Sixteen years later, he is still here!

.

During this time Ron has trained so many of our pupils to gain their Royal Life Saving Society Awards that it would be difficult to count them. Under his guidance pupils have gained every level of award from Rookie through to Distinction, open water awards and Assistant Teachers badges. In addition to this work he has also trained and assessed our teaching staff so that they are qualified to supervise pupils in the swimming pool.

.

Several years ago Ron celebrated 50 years of working with the Royal Life Saving Society, which is a huge achievement, and shows how committed he has been to the teaching of lifesaving to young people.

.

Mr Etherington is one of the most remarkable people I have met, as one of the School’s most fervent and committed supporters, and certainly proof that keeping busy and fit keeps you young, as he continues to train people to save lives into his eighties. We will not be saying a complete goodbye to Ron. He has been appointed as a Bridewell Fellow for his support of the School, so you will continue to see him around on Speech Day and other events. We wish him all the best and say a huge thank you for all the work that he has done on the School’s behalf.
