School win a fast flowing mixed hockey match against an OW side

OW’S Mixed Hockey side too strong for School X1

Sunday 22nd March was the occasion for the second mixed hockey match against the school on the all weather surface at KES. Craig and Laura Acquaye had organised the OW side but on the day two Lower Sixth pupils; Alex and Adam were added to the squad and Gwyn Phillips came out of retirement to play in goal.

The game was played in a competitive but sportsmanship way and was well umpired by Stuart Todd and Fred Pennell. It soon became clear that the O.W’s had control of midfield with Craig Acquaye dominating the centre midfield area, being well supported by Jamie Crorkin, Thieka Botteril and Imogen Draper. Despite some good defending the school found themselves three down at half time and Matthew Vowles was much the busier of the two goalkeepers. Ben Bilsland had proved very dangerous up front scoring one goal, a feat he was to repeat in the second half. The OW defence was holding firm with Alex Dickerson marshalling Sandra Collar and Harriet Swinerd into a cohesive unit.

.

In the second half the play was more even, although the O.W’s were always in control. Ed Willis scored two goals at close range one having rebounded off the post. However there were two outstanding goals scored in this half, both by the O.W’s. A quick counter attack developed down the right side lead to a firm pass across the goal and Adam Appelton’s volley rocketed into the top right corner of the goal. An individual run by Craig Acquaye left the defence stranded and a well struck shot went in on the left hand post. The school pressed forward and were unlucky not to have scored at least one more goal when Andrew Phillips shot was deflected by the keeper’s helmet!

.

The final score of 7-2 was a fair reflection of the play and everyone enjoyed the game. The school X1, all from the Upper Sixth, stated their intention to play next year, so maybe we will need to arrange two games?
