OW Overseas Receptions

Deputy Head Gwyn Phillips is meeting small groups of OW’s and current parents on his tour of the Far East.

A reception was held in Hong Kong at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Tuesday 4th August and a determined group of OW’s braved the weather conditions to attend. This is the tropical storm season and a Force 8 Typhoon warning was in place. Tommy Chan had publicised the event on Facebook and a number of younger OW’s responded. There was an excellent buffet supper and drinks provided and Gwyn updated everyone on the recent developments at King Edward’s. They were surprised that the Headmaster was moving on to a new school in January but intrigued by the proposed new 6th Form House, with on suite facilities. Each received a copy of the Annual report.

.

Many of them were working in businesses in Hong Kong and were reporting that although conditions were difficult they were optimistic about the future. Tommy Chan is seriously involved in motor sport and I hope we will be able to report on his racing in Malaysia.

.

The next day at breakfast I was also able to meet former Head Boy, Adam Clark, who has a senior position with a top legal firm in Hong Kong.

.

In Shanghai Gilette Kang acted as my guide and we visited the Yuyuan Garden, which is a protected group of heritage buildings including a very unusual zig zag bridge that was designed to keep evil spirits away. The garden dates from the Ming Dynasty and was constructed in 1559. We stayed in the area to have a traditional Dim Sum lunch that was delicious.

Gilette has just finished his first year at Imperial College London studying Material Sciences. He has been taking part in their volunteer programme as a classroom assistant in a London 6th Form College. He has agreed to act as an OW University Representative for Imperial College.
