KESW Golfer wins National trophy at the Junior ISGA Championship

This year has seen a series of firsts for the King Edward’s School golfers. Their first ever inter school fixtures and their first entry into national competitions and the first time a golfer has won a national title.

Carolina  and Euan  represented the School at the ISGA Junior Trophy competition held at the Shire Golf Course in the rolling countryside of North London. The course, designed by Seve Ballesteros, is a championship course and was a real challenge to the under 14 golfers taking part. Monday 24th June saw sweltering temperatures in the 30s and this added to the task of the young golfers. The format was a medal competition with gross and net trophies for the different age groups, as well as team prizes.

Carolina was in one of the early tee groups setting off from the 10th tee and she made a good start with an excellent 10 foot putt to make a par 4. The course was long and many of the holes were surrounded by bunkers and water hazards, so precision golf was required. Carolina had a good series of holes, with the occasional mishap, but she drove well and long off the tees and that was a major factor in her success. Her short game improved as the round went on but she wasn’t hopeful of being in contention for any prizes.

Euan, who was only recently 12, had a later start and he was fortunate to be playing with a teacher who was a scratch golfer. He was only using his new Callaway clubs for the third time but it was quite clear that he was comfortable with them. He strikes the ball well and has a very smooth swing but at this stage he doesn’t hit the ball long, but it does go straight. His putting technique is excellent and was commented on by his playing partners.

This was very much a round for experience and I am sure that he will have learned a lot when he returns next year.

Carolina shot a net score of 85 and this was good enough to win the Net Trophy for girls along with an attractive white leather belt. The Gross Score Trophy was won by another Spanish player from Windlesham School, so the course designed by Seve Ballesteros was obviously to their liking.

The following day a senior team from school took part in the Shire Trophy but after 6 holes of play the club klaxon sounded to bring the players in, as a dangerous lightning and thunderstorm hit the course. Play was not able to be resumed but the players hope to go back next term to complete a full round at the Shire course. The senior team consisted of Clara, Boss, Kavi and Mr Saunders.
